Our vineyard is currently divided into eight blocks. Each block has a different exposure and is planted to varying clones and rootstocks chosen to suit the soil content. Yields are intentionally kept low. The onsite vineyard manager is Don Sandberg. Currently, 14.5 acres are planted primarily to pinot noir with a little chardonnay in the mix as of 2014. Our vines are non-irrigated, trellised and trained in a vertical shoot position (VSP).

Yiayia
Sitting side by side, our founding blocks are appropriately named after Johanna and Perry’s mother and father. “Yiayia” and “Pappou” are grandmother and grandfather in Greek, by which they have been fondly known, since the birth of their first grandchild many years ago.
These blocks are planted on the southern portion of the property. The site slopes to the west benefiting from the cool Van Duzer wind every afternoon. Yiayia has a loamy reddish brown soil that is loaded with loose volcanic basalt rock. Pappou block, to the north, rolls back and lower on the hill to expose the ancient marine sediment soils that were formed millions of years ago when the Willamette Valley was under the sea. In much of the block, the top soil is brown and shallow with gold and white siltstone just a few inches below the surface. Basalt rocks are scattered throughout. A forest of oaks, maples and firs border the south and east of both blocks.

Abino Hill
Abino Hill is a name borrowed from Lynne’s childhood summer home in Ontario, Canada. It is an oblong, convex shaped piece of land just to the north of Pappou. The soil is grayish brown and shallow with underlying siltstone similar to Pappou, but without any basalt. This block is bordered to the north and south by two seasonal creeks. Alders, oaks and firs grow all around.

Tonka
Johanna and Don have fond memories of their days living in Tonka Bay, Minnesota. The word Tonka is Dakota Sioux for “big.” The Tonka block is our largest at 3.1 acres. It lies to the north of Abino, divided by a forested draw. The soils are shallow with underlying siltstone and shale. In several areas of the block, shale is exposed. Grass and brush fields are to the east and forested draws to the south and west. A small pond on the northwest corner attracts wildlife visitors.

Oscar
Oscar is dedicated to our old friend, Lynne and Perry’s golden retriever, whose ashes were spread around the majestic oak that marks this block. This steep westward hill has loamy reddish brown soil that is shallow on the upper elevation to moderately deep at the lower end. White siltstone underlies the soil, and jagged basalt from the volcanic soils above litter the block.

Petros North
Petros is divided into two blocks, North and South.
